How to Spot Counterfeit Car Parts Before You Buy

August 16, 2026

A counterfeit car part can look identical to the genuine one from the outside, but the difference shows up after installation: shorter lifespan, weaker performance, and sometimes damage to other parts of the car. Here's what to check before buying.

1. Compare the price to the market average

If a part is priced significantly and unreasonably below what several other sellers are asking, that's the first warning sign. Genuine parts are rarely sold much below the usual price range.

2. Check the part number and packaging

  • Compare the printed part number against the manufacturer's or agent's official number
  • Inspect print quality on the box — faded text or spelling mistakes are common signs of a fake
  • Look for the official seal or hologram if the manufacturer normally uses one

3. Ask for a clear warranty

A trustworthy seller offers a specific warranty with a clear duration and terms. Refusing to offer any warranty, or wording it vaguely, is worth reconsidering before you buy.

4. Confirm it fits your exact car

Counterfeit parts are sometimes "close" to spec rather than an exact match for your car's chassis number or precise model. Ask the seller to confirm compatibility using the exact original part number your car needs, not just a general description.

5. Deal with sellers who have a track record

A seller with previous listings, ratings, and history on the platform is more reliable than a new account offering the part at a tempting price. Don't hesitate to ask about the part's origin before paying.

Bottom line

The price gap between a genuine and a counterfeit part is often small, but the performance gap over time is large. Browse car parts listings on Auto Bazar and always check the part number and warranty before buying.
